2025 Tim McCarthy Human Rights Champion Award Application

Nearly seven years after Tim’s untimely passing, we prepare to honor once again his legacy of fierce and effective rights activism, with a call for nominations for the Sixth Annual Tim McCarthy Human Rights Champion Award.

Dr. Brian O’Malley, Jay Critchley and Bill Docker and others have continued the work of The Tim Fund, and in particular, of the annual award.  The Champion award will be presented to a notable recipient this December 10, 2025 at the Barnstable County Human Rights Day Event in Hyannis.
This announcement is to outline the process of soliciting nominations of the award recipient, criteria for selection, and the decision-making process.

Criteria for Selection: The award will recognize a Tim McCarthy Human Rights Champion, an activist individual or organization with a Cape Cod connection, working effectively to promote Human Rights, as affirmed in the United Nations 1948 “Universal Declaration of Human Rights.” These includes: dignity, liberty, equality; spiritual, public and political freedoms of thought, opinion, religion, conscience and peaceful association; cultural rights including the right to healthcare and an adequate standard of living; establishment of these rights and the organizational structures to empower the individual. The Tim Fund also adds the following considerations: environmental rights and LGBTQ rights.

Recipient Recognition:  We are honored to have been accepted by the Barnstable County Human Rights Advisory Commission, for inclusion with the other two annual awards presented at the Human Rights Day Event. The recipient of the Award will be expected to attend, give a short speech about their work and give additional presentations on their work to others in the year following their award. The annual award recipient will receive a $2,000 Award Grant to further their activism and human rights work.

Selection Committee: The Tim McCarthy Human Rights Champion Award is honored to have had the following individuals on the award recipient selection committee over these years: Marian Roth, Luke Hadley, Hon. Maria Lopez, Rachel White, Jay Critchley, Dr. Brian O’Malley, Bill Docker and Rev. Kate Wilkinson. New this year will be the four living prior Champion awardees: Rev. Brenda Haywood (2020), Lisa Brown (2020), Sandra Faiman-Silva (2021), and Ngina Lythcott (2023).

Applicants and nominees will be ranked by each member of the committee.  The final decision is to be made consensually.

The deadline for nomination and applications will be Friday, October 10, 2025. Application requirements are below.

Nominees and Applicants are asked to fill out an application form, either online at www.thetimfund.org  or to send it to “The Tim Fund, c/o The Provincetown Community Compact, PO Box 819, Provincetown, MA 02657.” The Provincetown Community Compact is the acting fiscal sponsor for the Tim Fund.
